Top Cays to Explore and Fish in Exuma Boats

August 29, 2018

The Exumas are a slice of heaven on earth, perfect for bonefishing, relaxing, and exploring in Exuma boats. With more than 360 different cays, which is a shallow/low island on a coral reef, there is much to see and discover. As you plan your upcoming trip to the Exumas, add any of these stops to your list.

Moria Harbour Cay

The Moriah Harbour Cay National Park is between Great and Little Exuma. This stretch of more than 13,000 acres is home to colorful and gorgeous marine life. From the white, sand dunes to crystal clear blue waters, you will love this piece of paradise. Since it is a part of a national park, wildlife is protected. This means you will get to see things like crawfish, crabs, fish, oysters, groupers, birds, and more in their natural habitat.

Staniel Cay

The Staniel Cay is a little less than 100 miles southeast of the town Nassau. The weather is always gorgeous, and life is laid back. It is commonly known as a beach town, with great restaurants and things to do. It is home to a variety of beaches, allowing you to explore each to get a new experience. From beaches great for swimming to others for walking or photographing, you will not be bored on this cay.

Big Major Cay

Do you love pigs? Also known as the official home of the swimming pigs or “pig beach,” take a trip to Big Major Cay for an experience you can’t get anywhere else. There are nearly 20 pigs on this cay that love to swim. How their existence came to be is still a mystery, but that does not stop them from having fun in the sun. It has been guessed that the pigs were on a ship that crashed, and they found the island as they swam for safety. Since they spend most of their time around humans, they aren’t shy and love to say hello!

Shroud Cay

Located in the Exuma Cays National Land and Sea Park, the Shroud Cay is also a protected archipelago of land. It is known for their beautiful limestone and tropical birds. You can also see many of the area’s local animals, such as iguanas and birds. It has a diverse terrain, with sand, mangrove creeks, and swamps. You’ll be amazed at how clear the water is, though! While there, check out the North Hawksbill Sand Bar during low tide. You should also explore color and marine life at Russell Rocks Reef. Also, check out the colorful coral garden at Pirates Cut. Love to snorkel? Check out the Eastern Shoreline.
