Now, let’s get in to what you need to know about hurricanes and hurricane season. What is a hurricane?  Hurricanes are tropical storms that form over the water - they are, in essence, tropical cyclones. Once winds of a tropical storm reach over 74 miles per hour, the storm becomes classified as a hurricane. Hurricanes are ranked from Category 1 - Category 5, with a Category 5 hurricane being the most severe. Official hurricane season starts on June 30, and will end on November 30. While that seems to take out a lot of your travel months - don’t worry! High-intensity hurricanes in the Bahamas are rare. How will it impact the area?  The impact a hurricane will have on an area is reliant largely on the Category. We’ve broken down the Categories, and what they can mean below:  Category 1: These hurricanes will cause minor damage, and have winds ranging from 74-95 miles per hour. Category 1 hurricanes are nothing to worry about, and while you should stay safe on shore they aren’t cause for major concern. Category 2: Hurricanes that reach 96-110 mph winds rank in Category 2, and can cause extensive damage. As an example, extensive damage can be defined as breaking windows and uprooting trees. Category 3: The next level up, Category 3, can be devastating. This means the 111-129 mph winds can not only break windows, but doors as well.  Category 4: Category 4 hurricanes can cause catastrophic damage, tearing off roofs and severely damaging the external structure of buildings and additional infrastructure. Category 4 hurricanes have winds reaching 130-156 mph. Category 5: Rare, but not unheard of. Category 5 hurricanes have winds that reach over 157 mph and it can’t get any worse than this. Category 5 hurricanes can level cities and towns - this is extremely dangerous. Bonefish typically live in the coastal areas - and enjoying schooling. So it’s not uncommon for you to see quite a few of them surfing the area together! Don’t be surprised if you even see a few hundred - schools of bonefish can travel with groups of 40-400! Not only do bonefish school together, they tend to stay in the same area for a few days. So if you see a few, you’ll most likely see them in a day or two after that. Typically, the warmer the months, the deeper the bonefish like to be under the water.  Diet As bottom feeders, Bonefish typically feed on shrimps, mollusks, worms, and small fishes. While bonefish travel in schools, they don’t necessarily feed in schools. So expect a bonefish that is feeding to be alone for a few.  Size Bonefish can grow up to 31 inches long, and weigh approximately 4-6 pounds in the Bahamas. Fish that reside in the Florida area tend to be larger - weighing approximately 13-14 pounds. The average bonefish live between 19-24 years, and reach full maturity around 3-4 years.  Fishing Tips When it comes to fishing bonefish, you’ll have to be patient and alert. As a general rule of thumb, if you begin to see wakes or nervous water that could be the sign of a bonefish school swimming by. Bonefish are almost a green color, and easy to see when they are belly-down. However, if they get spooked you’ll see their side which will nearly blend into the bottom of the ocean floor. As they blend in, bonefish can be difficult to see and track. Stay smooth in all of your movements, and be careful not to spook or frighten the bonefish. Once you hook a bonefish, don’t be too quick to pull the fish out of the water. Using a heavier fly will create an impact - it’ll break the water quickly and the line will sink deeper. All of which is essential in staying on your target. When it comes to accessories, we mean more than just the line - clothing too. Durable jackets/clothing and hardy eyewear will be your best option to stay safe while on the water. Pick a Great Location When out on the water, we recommend picking a great location. It can be hard to find shade of the water in The Exumas, but if we do we recommend finding a shaded location, one that can help to protect from the wind. The shade will also help in finding some dark places on the water - making it easier to see bonefish.  Stay Quiet Bonefishing, and fishing in general, always requires silence. But with the sensitivity of bonefish, it’s important to stay silent. Bonefish have incredible hearing, and when conditions aren’t great they are going to be more on edge and more sensitive to any last sounds.  An experienced guide will be even more important in tough conditions and we are here to help! Local restaurants such as Palapa and Blue on the Water have some of the most delicious food on the island. Water taxis can be used to navigate to and from surrounding islands, giving you an opportunity to enjoy the nightlife.  Things to Do There are of course the beautiful beaches, but you can take one of our sightseeing tours to see the best sites around the island. You will be outside in the heat for the majority of the day so be sure to wear a hat that will shade you and cut down on the water’s reflection.  What should I pack?  We’ve covered what to where, but what should you pack? I’ve heard they might be hard to see...suggestions?  Bonefish can be a little difficult to see in the water, but there are some signs you should look for. Feeding or traveling bonefish make waves in shallow water, their backs are almost a light green color and they are very reflective of the surrounding environment. Even if you see them at first, and then lose don’t panic - you’ll find them again.  When should I travel? The Caribbean is always sunny and gorgeous, with the occasional rain! The temperatures average in the 80s, with the lows hitting 70s during the winer. That being said, we would recommend visiting the Exumas during the dry season and booking a few days of vacation to enjoy all that the Exumas have to offer. As nature preserves, you can see nature (both on land and underwater) in their original state.  History of the Exumas Colonization of the Exumas dates back to the 1400s by the Lucayan Indians. It is said they first found the land after leaving Africa. A century later, the Spanish discovered the land and establish salt mining. Sadly, as they colonized, they enslaved the Lucayan Indians. During the mid-1600s, the British also found the chain of islands, as well as some people in America who were escaping from the Revolutionary War. The land housed several cotton plantations.  Also, somewhere in this timeframe, the area was frequented by pirates. It’s rumored that Blackbeard and James Kidd were some of the many pirates that made it to this part of the Earth.  During the late 1600s and into the 1700s, tensions were high between the Spanish and British. But that changed after the Treaty of Versailles in the late 1780s, which gave rights of the Exumas to the British. The islands were then primarily used for cotton and salt mining. However, things began to change in the early 1800s. After a loss during the Revolutionary War, many British landowners lost their property. Then when slavery was abolished in the late 1830s, the slaves were free and able to set their own roots in this beautiful part of the world.  Sights to See When traveling to the Exumas, here are a few sites to tell your tour guide that you would like to see:  Swimming pigs: Major’s Spot Cay is home to the swimming pigs. Next, be sure to wear a life vest to keep you afloat in case you fall. Dangers While swimming or reef diving, you will need to be cautious of the environment and interactions with fish and other marine animals. First, if you see any marine life while on your own, avoid making contact or feeding them. You do not know how they will react. If you are deep sea diving and come across a shark, it is important to remain calm. In many cases, your normalcy will keep them calm and they will continue swimming along as though nothing is wrong. In the event of a shark attack, violent and rash movement on your part can make things worseâ€"however, make sure to defend yourself. If you have anything on hand to use as a weapon, use it.
